Teenage Drug Abuse:
Teenage drug abuse is not something many adults
are willing to face up to. Parent denial of drug abuse in their
teens is the major problem in early intervention. Many teenagers
have been using drugs long before parents ever suspected there may
be a problem. The teenager has been avoiding issues in life by using
drugs without even handling the earlier problem. Drug and alcohol
abuse covers up earlier problems in life. Often there are more problems
than even the parent could see. A problem that every one knows everything
about is not the problem causing the abuse. This is why one
gets no where consulting a youth about problems they are willing
to tell you everything about.
Teenage Alcohol Abuse:
Growing up is the primary mission of any teenager.
What does growing up mean to a teenager? Teenager's Answer: Being
an adult. What's an adult? Teenager's Answer: Someone who can drink
alcohol and stay out as long as they want. This is what teenagers
see adults, their parents and people in movies do. So the reasoning
goes; "If I drink and stay out late with friends, I will grow
up and become an adult". Too simple an answer you may say?
Ask any teenager why it's OK for them to drink and not come home
at night. Answer: I am old enough, everyone does it, it's fun, it's
no big deal - I am with my friends.
Teens should grow up:
What really is growing up? Growing up is working
out how to get along with others, exchange skills or products for
the necessities of living (food and housing), retaining personal
self determinism and integrity, taking on a role of responsibility
in society.
TV commercials and movies show adults drinking and caring on. The
media makes this look glamorous and adult or funny and carefree.
Most of the people I know who got involved in drug and alcohol abuse
never became true adults. They never became responsible despite
going out late, drinking alcohol and getting older.
The solution to teenage drug and alcohol abuse is helping the teenager
get along with others - like their own parents and house rules,
exchanging skills and products for money and good will, retaining
their integrity and self determinism and finally taking a role of
responsibility in society. A teenager ought to do that. They ought
to be an adult.
